    Found your blog via google. Me and my friend, we are writing a non-commerse article about Bakken and other shale formations. We are tryind to define an ERoEI [Energy Returned on Energy Invested] for the Bakken oil by ourselves. We know how much Distillate Fuel Oil is used in ND for industrial purposes, and also the Bakken production. But we’ve got some problems: lots of tonns of steel is needed for several strings (or pipes?) in the well and steelmaking needs lots of energy (21 gigajoules per metric tonne). So, to define ERoEI, we need to define how much steel is needed per one well. We googled it for many hours, but, unfortunately, not succeeded. Please, can you tell me an approximate weight of steel (all pipes/strings) per one well? Just approximate, plus/minus 70 tonnes or short tonnes. And how many layers of pipe (casing strings?) are in one well? 3-5? I mean conductor pipe etc.

      There are many strings of pipe that are used in the well.

      The conducter pipe (or rathole) is about 2500 lbs, and it doesn’t go far under ground.

      Inside the conductor pipe is Surface Casing. It is 9.625 inches diameter. There is usually 1700 feet and it weighs 36 pounds per foot.

      Surface Casing String Weight For A Bakken Well 1700 ft X 36 Lbs/ft = 61,200 lbs

      Inside service casing is intermediate casing. It is 7 inches in diameter and goes about 10,000 feet deep. Usually half of the intermediate casing is 26 pounds per foot and half 29 pounds per foot.

      Intermediate String Weight for A Bakken Well (5000 lbs X 26 lbs/ft) + (5000 lbs X 29 lbs/ft) = 275,000 lbs

      At the bottom of the well in the horizontal part is 10,000 feet of 4.5 inch casing called the liner. It weighs about 11 pounds per foot.

      Weight of a liner string 10,000 ft X 11 lbs/ft= 110,000 lbs

      2500 lbs + 61,200 lbs + 275,000 lbs + 110,000 lbs = 448,700 lbs

      There is another string of 4.5 inch casing that runs from the surface to the bottom of the 7 inch casing, but this string is removed after the fracturing process and the pipes are reused several times.

      There is also production pipe and “sucker rods” that run down into the well. I’m not sure about the weights of these, but I would guess they are about 60,000 pounds total.

      So one completed Bakken well has about 500,000 pounds, or 250 Tons of steel casing, tubing, and rods.

      Conductor, surface and intermediate casing is also held in place with cement. I’m not sure if that is part of your calculations.

    Of course, but it will be on russian) So, i’ll translate the core. I think we will finish in the beginning of the next week – just this night we completed our view on ERoEI, bakken, conventional and tight oil and synthesising them all to a one structure.

    excuse me for my bad english, i learned it only in school.
