The hours are long, the weather is cold, and time is short in the oilfield. The oil has been down there for millions of years, but suddenly we are in a hurry, and tempers rise even if there is a five minute delay. With so much stress, exhaustion, and hurry, fast food is all a person wants. The problem is that with rest and exercise already missing from the health equation, it is important to keep a good diet to maintain fitness in the oilfield.
Here are a few healthy options for people who are on the move. All have worked well for me.
Tubs of organic lettuce, baby spinach, arugula etc available at the store. I usually just eat them without dressing.
Apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, oranges, etc… All fruits that don’t go bad too easily and can be snacked on in a run.
Pecans, cashews, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, etc.
Chocolate milk. Apparently chocolate milk is the best thing to rebuild your muscles after a workout, and that definitely applies to the oilfield as well.
Sandwiches on high quality bread, with PBJ, quality lunch meat, tomatoes, lettuce, not too much mayo. I can put a few of these together quickly. It is much better than Subway, which isn’t very healthy at all.
Premade fruit shakes, like Naked and Odwalla. Yes they are expensive. Yes, they are advertised as healthier than they actually are. But they are tasty, and better than soda.
Single serving packs of baby carrots, cucumber slices, and celery sticks have been my go to vegetables.
Beef jerky. It is expensive, but fairly healthy, and packs a good punch of calories and protein.
Hard boiled eggs and a bottle of hot sauce. Nuff’ said.
Precooked steak, chicken, or fish in a zip lock bag.
Precooked soups and stews in a thermos.
High quality fruit juices.
Cheese slices, miniature Babybel cheese wheels.
Plenty of water.
Dark chocolate bars.
I try to put together some combination of these for lunches, saving money and opting for healthier stuff. The boomtowns can make healthy eating difficult, but there is no point in making money here only to destroy your body in the process. I see many people out here eating too much fast food, gas station food, frozen meals, energy drinks, soda, and candy, so I wish everyone good luck with a nutrious diet.
